Happy Birthday to Wynonna! (May 30th) My sister (Nikki of Bricky & Nikki's) and I were very lucky to be able to attend the birthday celebration for Wynonna put together by Sirius XM! It was incredibly fun, funny, and also meaningful. Beginning today, for those who reside in America & Canada, it's available for viewing & listening in the Sirius XM app. For those without Sirius or outside of the US & Canada...these things always find their way to You Tube! You can identify me by the incredibly loud laugh! Particularly, when Cactus Moser, Wynonna's drummer & incredibly kind husband, told everyone that their grandkids call them Nonni & Dewey. He's Dewey. My cat Dewi is named Dewi & this was funny to me! I also led 3 of the rounds of clapping for things Wynonna said that I feel particularly strongly about.
Wynonna Judd has for a very long time been known by just her first name but everything is new with her, including a particularly joyful presentation of the logo for her name, as seen above. If there's a lightness and an airiness in that signature, it's extremely hard~earned.
We can't help who or what we've been connected with in the past but we can definitely free ourselves from it moving forward. Some things you just need to entirely free yourself from in order to have any room to breathe. I can genuinely say it was a very powerful experience being in that room with Wynonna because through every second, you intensely felt you were watching someone in the process of being born. There actually isn't any question that we were. That's very much where she is. Over the course of about an hour & a half, she was VERY honest about everything, sometimes naming names (or practically, if you were really listening) and sometimes not but there really wasn't any doubt as to what she was referring to if you were tuned in & watching her expressions. Because she's very much in the process of freeing herself from the people and situations that have contained her, all the while railing against the attempted confinement, I'm really looking forward to the music she'll be creating in the future ~ all of it done exactly her way. Sometimes the best thing you can do while in the process of shaking off the darkness of the past and just beginning to put into your own words the experiences that have brought you to the present moment is to express yourself through someone else's words that you strongly identify with. Wynonna has done just that with the version of Tom Petty's "Refugee", she recorded with equally great singer, Lainey Wilson, for the upcoming "Petty Country", an album that has been worked on with love by the Petty family and all of the artists asked by Tom Petty's family to be a part of it. I highly recommend giving a look & listen to the newly released video for "Refugee" here:
It's real. And it's new...Just like Wynonna.
