Have to admit Hard Times was not a fav of mine of mine. And compared to the 3 singles that 'got away'........Dave, Drag Me Down and Hold of Me........a travesty!
⭐ Mine isn't a "should have", it's a VERY MUCH STILL CAN HAPPEN! Basically, release "OUT THE BACK OF BOOMTOWN" song by song by song... and WATCH what happens! ⭐
⭐ That's what I'M talkin' about! "The Zone" is one of those extraordinary songs that teaches all other bands on earth How To Do It... even the Rolling Stones! ⭐
And then they released and had a number 1 with Rat Trap! But agree, there are a number of reasons if it had been released that would have been against it.
Was just about to add perhaps Joey would have done well after Rat Trap but not so well before. But then you risk the accusations of just a variation on a theme. Was also going to add 5 minutes didn't stop Mr Blue Sky doing well a year after Joey. Still think for a band perceived at that point as part of the punk movement they would have been criticised for an epic.
At the time I always loved Blind Date, mainly because it was a brilliant start for the ATFTT tour. But looking back I understand it wasn't a singles sort of song.....but certainly a thumping live track!
Only thing going against it is length of song maybe. Would have been twice as long as average single at the time so would radio and TOTP have done it justice?
I think Me and Howard Hughes would have done well.
This clip would suggest Howard Hughes came close to consideration for a single. I know the Rat Trap video was done without expectation that would be a single as the story goes. Maybe this was another possible. No point on spending on a video if not.
Always thought "hard times" should have been a single instead of "tonight"...agree wit nick as regards ,"blind date" super track.
I know it was a b-side but "When the night comes" absolutely mega.
Or "Walking downtown". Loved that track
There is barely a track on the first three albums that isn't an absolute banger that lesser bands wouldn't have made a single!

I think "Keep It Up." Coz its fun, very catchy, and good to sing along too.
Also a cracking video on Kenny Everett Show
I always thought She's Gonna Do You In should have been a single it had everything in 1977.
Not a chance of a top 10 but am sure it would have gained more fans in the long run.......
