Hello folks – I’m still getting familiar with my role as mayor but one thing I’ve been thinking about is how we can occasionally take Citizens of Boomtown out of cyberspace and into the real world…..what can we do about real world meet-ups and gatherings?
I have a few ideas which I want to mull over for a bit longer but to test the water, there’s an opportunity for a get-together that may just fit the bill. This is the upcoming Great British Alternative Music Festival being held over the last week of September (30 Sept to 3 October).
It seems that some citizens have been going to Skegness for this punk, new wave and ska festival for quite a few years and because it’s the last time the Rats will be playing in the UK this year, I decided I was going to check it out for myself.
For those of you who haven’t been before, the long weekend is hosted by Butlins, so all the accommodation, food, drinks etc are catered for and – crucially – we’re all in the same place. Seems like an ideal opportunity for a gathering of the fans.
So, are you were going or thinking of going? What other bands from the line-up are you looking forward to?
I’ve spoken to Jules and she’ll also be building up to Skegness on her Bob Geldof Facebook page and I’m sure there will be talk of it on The Rats’ other social media outlets. So hopefully, together we can build the anticipation to fever pitch and have a great rat-fuelled weekend!
Jules has shared some of her photos from last time (thanks Jules!!) and if we have as much fun as the band seem to be having, I'm not sure where we can go wrong!!

So let us know your plans…..
Coldog
Best act? (Apart from The Rats)
Which act are you looking forward to seeing most? (apart from Rats)
Eddie & The Hot Rods have withdrawn. Past their bedtime 😂 Sunday is looking a little light. Blockheads and Skids and in bed by 11pm…
… though maybe in bed by 10pm on Saturday if Reds is full 😴
If you are going, and still have any energy left on Sunday 23:00 : I can recommend Ferocious Dog. I met their tourmanager and driver, a Dutch couple, on the ferry last month. Very nice people, so I assume the band is great too 😀
Studio 36 - looks huge. I assume the chairs and tables won’t be there. Accommodates 1,600 seated.
I will post plans for meet ups nearer the time. We usually eat early and gather in The Beachcomber pub afterwards before heading off to see bands. Anyone who wants to eat together, we go early, when it opens (5 pm).
are you getting excited yet?
I don’t remember Studio 36. Is it new? Someone said it’s the biggest stage.
Reds on Friday Night and Centre Stage on Sunday Night.
We just haven’t got a clue what to do on Saturday…
... maybe Studio 36 :-)
I've not had anything from Butlins to say it's not going ahead and it's still being promoted on their website.
I'll let everyone know if I hear anything different
Is Skegness definitely happening? Am about to book, but noted the date is no longer showing on RAM https://www.rockartistmanagement.co.uk/boomtownrats
Saturday evening only appears to have the Rats playing at present. Glad The Vapors and Tom Robinson are playing, seen them both not too long ago in London and both are well worth seeing.
Unfortunately I won't be coming to Skegness after all... But I will be there in spirit! I'm sure you will have a great time. Enjoy!
