I consider myself to be incredibly lucky to have been born in 1965. This meant I had the best music in my era. While there were other things in my life that were truly awful, music was my respite. Of course, I was 12 when the Rats appeared. They entered my life with a force like no other. They gave me so much, that they themselves could never know. They changed so much for me and showed me a different path. I’d not have had any of that if I’d not been born when I was.
I’d never have dreamt that I could later become so involved with band with what I do and becoming inaugural mayor of this very community. I could never have dreamt that I’d have met so many new like minded friends, who understand my deep passion. I was so lucky to just be around at that the right time and place to become FB admin on the BG page and that led me to the mayorship. My health isn’t good, so again, they give me respite from the unlucky things in my life. I am so lucky for all of this and extremely grateful for this luck and love I have.
#Lucky2024.
For me it was the day I decided to put my hat in the ring to become Mayor of Boomtown. Alcohol may have played in part in submitting my ‘manifesto’ but when I read it back the next morning I thought it would do! ,Having been a fan since 1978 and conscious of the saying ’never meet your heroes’, would this enhance or ruin my lifetime of following this band? I later received an email saying Pete would be giving me a call to explain the role. Pete B ringing me……! I remember one of the things she said, “it’s just a bit of fun”, but what of year of fun it was!
And then recording chats with Garry and Pete…..awesome. Not forgetting Darren, who gave the first band related chat for COB ( such a nice guy) and then Paul readily agreeing to have a chat. When Paul said ( outside the chat) he had been learning all the songs again from the first Elvis Presley album again, and how we all knew that album I sort of stuttered ‘yes’, but realising I had never actually listened to the whole thing. I am now a massive fan of that album, an ambitious, naive, undamaged Elvis….a wonderful album.
And through COB meeting so many wonderful Rats fans, a number of whom I keep in touch with now on a regular basis.
So luck was applying for the role and getting it. They say you can make your own luck, but when there are so many wonderful people along the way, I tend to think it was fate.
( And if I win, Mark, I’m a large and need a new ‘ars over tit’🤣🤣🤣😂🫣😉🤪)
And a favourite memory was getting a photo with the band with my 2 sons with me in 2022. I had just retired and Bob said to them, “so what’s he going to do now he has retired”. The oldest one replied, “how much do we have to pay you to take him on tour with you!”. Bob apparently smiled at that…..so proud of my boys!
