It started even before the Rats took the stage. There's Florence & the Machine and I think there just might be The Rats & the Rain Machine. It might be the Rats greatest act of Mojo yet but more often than not on this incredible run of summer shows, it RAINS, it POURS, the WIND WHIPS....none of this affects Bob Geldof's hair and none of this even happens at all...ONCE THE RATS STEP ONTO THE STAGE. The Rain Machine shuts off & the show kicks in! The drenched crowd leave their cares behind and rarely have I seen so many smiling faces than at the Rats summer shows. The joy spreads throughout. All of this was most certainly true at App-Fest in Tewkesbury on Thursday night.
You get the distinct feeling that somewhere in the crowd there's someone...or several someones...this night will change everything for. Hearing the Rats maybe literally for the first time....and being blown away! Hearing the Rats for the thousandth time and having that be worth EVERYTHING. Hearing Bob Geldof's harmonica and Darren Beale's guitar playing intertwine and having it take you a million miles away while still being fully present to experience the thrill. The kind no one else can stir up....
And then there's the joy I was talking about.
Maybe Darren Beale's son, Roscoe, is this bursting at the seams with joy out of hearing & seeing his father playing before thousands, fully a part of the Boomtown Rats. Or maybe it's JUST what their music does. Every time a crowd gathers, there's always the possibility that the reason this group of people has been brought together is to change the life of just one among them ~ to lift them out of a dark place they were in, to make them feel the exhilaration of life again, and to let them know they're going to find their way. If Roscoe was feeling THIS happy, you can be certain so were thousands more...Bringing TRUE meaning to the rain Bob Geldof, Pete Briquette, Simon Crowe, Paul Cuddeford, Alan Dunn, and one little boy's father, Darren Beale, chased away.
Someone definitely found their way...and the Rats SET FIRE TO THE RAIN.
