📯🎄📯
I was a small-town teenaged kid in 1984 when the Band Aid single "Do They Know It's Christmas" was released. I liked the tune from Bob and Midge, and of course I was drawn by hearing so many of my new wave and alt-pop favorites from MTV on one track. But I was really struck when reading about the backstory and the reason that Geldof had spearheaded the effort - to actually DO something about famine in Ethiopia, instead of just letting it flash by as a newsreel. As I read, the world opened up to me and I learned that I had responsibility to do what I could to make life better for others, whether near or far. Self-interest didn't need to enter the picture, but I deduced that the world would only become a better place for me if it became better for others around the world who didn't have access to the resources I could find in plenty. The next summer, Live Aid exploded all of these thoughts into living color and sky high letters - there they were: More favorite musicians, including my new favorites The Boomtown Rats. More exposure to the needs of others. More realization that people -could- be collectively good and work for the benefit of others. Music really could be a mighty force for change. We can be heroes just for one day. And one more day, and one more day. One day at a time. xo - Jeff #JustForOneDay
