Hi citizens, it’s me again with my usual rambling about the war. I feel like with 130 days in, most people around the world are already desensitised to what’s happening here. And it doesn’t have anything to do with them so why should they even care, right?
This mindset makes me absolutely sick. And I’m sad to see so many people from other countries, even people I used to call my friends, falling for this mindset. Before the war I put so much of my energy into doing something about different causes around the world that seemingly had nothing to do with me. I went on marches, I protested and I donated, even though my life wouldn’t be any different if I didn’t do anything. But there’s this funny little thing called empathy. A lot of people seem to forget that it exists. But I feel with everything that’s been happening around the world in the past few years, it’s something that we shouldn’t forget.
No one is going to kill you if you donate a mere £5 to a Ukrainian foundation, wear a blue and yellow ribbon on your bag, or simply keep up with the news about what’s happening here. russia has set out to destroy everything Ukrainian - our culture, our cities and our people. If you want to find out more about it, here’s a map of all cultural Ukrainian losses during the war. Museums, monuments, historic sites - all that wiped out in an angry tantrum by the world’s biggest colonial power. https://uaculture.org/culture-loss-en/
So is it too much to simply have some empathy for Ukraine? I think the answer to this question is pretty obvious. I know it’s hard to keep your focus on everything that’s happening in the world, but even keeping those issues in mind is much better than completely ignoring them. That’s what I think, at least. And that’s what a lot of people nowadays fail to recognise.

We’re not completely helpless, but the world needs to do something other than dumbly standing aside and watching everything that’s happening here like it’s a boring soap opera. My world was shook after the news about russian missiles hitting a shopping mall with around a thousand of people inside. It wasn’t accidental, it was a planned attack aimed to kill as much Ukrainians as possible. What did the world say about it? “Oh, what were they doing in a shopping mall during a war?” “If my country was invaded I wouldn’t go shopping like that.” “How are there 1000 people in a mall during a war?” “How can you know if the mall wasn’t a military base?”
Some people will never understand what it’s like to live in a war-torn country. And instead of even trying to comprehend it, they simply joke about it or treat it like a hoax or a conspiracy. Please, don’t be those people. I’m probably rambling by now so here’s my message to the world to end this post.
Have some fucking empathy. Is that too much to ask?
Paul
Your right about what you say. So many people are so easily desensitised to things happening in the world around them until it effects them directly. There are people who care in the world, just sadly not enough of them and often a lot of those people are not in positions of power to make a big difference, so like you say the most we can do is make donations, sign petitions, try educate people around us etc… I’m sorry that other countries are not doing enough to help. I hope that changes soon.
I don't know what to say to you really, Paul.
I have also been worried that the world is getting used to there being a war in Europe....and that can't be allowed to happen.
Then I read today that one European country has donated it's entire fleet of Mig 29s to Ukraine and the UK and US are actively training Ukrainian soldiers. So things are happening .... It's just that they are not happening fast enough.
You are not rambling when you write. Not at all, you are very eloquent.
The war in Ukraine is still major news here in Denmark. The news about the Mall disturbs my soul and shakes my bones. The world needs a new plan about Russia and spending more money on NATO is not the answer. I hoped that Bob would get involved and speak to that cunt Putin(Bob has met him before) and try to stop things before we lose Ukraine.
Stay safe Paul and keep these post coming.
Have you heard Bob’s solo track The Great Song of Indifference? It’s about peoples attitudes towards Africa. It applies here too. Bob says indifference is the worst of all. Even if you’re against something, at least you have an opinion. It’s very true. People are very insular and so selfish, I’m afraid. It’s sad.
I’m getting flashbacks to BG talking about Africa during Live Aid. Your message is just as compelling @Major Paul . I don’t think everyone is bored or forgetting or at all blasé or complacent, but fair to say the media have stopped headlining daily. I suppose governments are trying to avoid wider conflict by challenging directly but as I understand it more money is being provided for weapons etc. You’re right to say others are standing by helplessly (I.e. Everyday people) but I don’t believe it’s apathy. Pretty sure people I know on here have empathy even if true sympathy is not possible.
didn’t know how to splice in some pictures that i took this week, but this is my life right now. small reminders of the missile attacks that russia aimed at my living area.
